What is an external hard drive?

An external hard drive is a drive that is used to store data outside the computer or laptop. It connects to a computer via a USB port. Desktop drives come with a power cable (providing power to the drive) and USB cable (for data transfer) while laptop drives have USB cable only which provides power and help in data transfer.

Types of external drives

There are many types of external hard drives. External hard drives use different types of internal drives like 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch drive.  Desktop drives are bigger in size. They come in different capacities.

External hard drive brands

There are many companies that make these drives. Some popular names are Western Digital, Seagate, Lacie, Buffalo Technology, LG, Maxtor, Samsung, Adata, Toshiba etc. These companies have various models. For example Seagate have backup plus, expansion desktop etc. Western Digital has G-Drive, My Passport, My Cloud Home, WD Elements, My Book etc. to name a few. Lacie has D2, Big etc.

These drives have single cable called as USB cable that connects the drive to computer for data transfer or reading. These drives don’t come with power cable and are known as portable 2.5 inch drives. Both types of these external drives have same design and mechanism. They have heads, PCB, motor and platters.
