What is raid 0?

Raid 0 is for performance.  It is disk striping. Data is spread across more than one disk i.e. data is stored on more than one disks and all the disks will be in use during data processing. Raid 0 starts with a minimum of 2 hard drives. Raid is either controlled by software or hardware controller. In case of one disk failure, the whole data is not accessible. This means raid 0 is best for I/O performance but is not secure way of dealing with data.

 

How raid 1 works?

Raid 1 is a type of array in which one drive is cloned on top of the other. It is also called disk mirroring. This type of raid is more secure than raid 1 and the reason is simple; if one disk fails, the data will still exist on the second disk. It is a low cost type of disk array. The performance is not great. Raid 1 can be setup with a software or hardware. The other drawback is the amount of space that is sacrificed i.e. if there are two disks of 500GB, the total available space will be 500GB not 1TB.
