What is a hard drive?
Some people call a PC tower a hard drive. It is not hard drive. It is the computer tower that has all the components inside to run it. These include motherboard, ram, power supply, wires, dvd drive and hard drive. A hard drive is a device that stores all computer information and data. It is located in one of the hard drive bays inside the casing. There are two sizes in traditional hard drives, 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch. Most desktops use 3.5 inch drives. 2.5 inch drive is being used in laptops. Both these drives are connected to the motherboard via sata or ide connector. Ide is older type while sata is newer type connector. There are new types of drives in the market these days. They are known as ssd drives. They are fast and smaller in physical size.
Traditional hard drives have mechanical parts inside while ssd drives have flash chips to store data. Hard drives come in different capacities like 250 GB, 320 GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and so on. Solid State Drives (SSD) are replacing traditional hard drives because of high speed. Traditional drives are cheaper in price compare to ssd drives. Due to size and low cost advantage, traditional drives are best storage devices for huge storage and data severs. All these drives can fail.
