What is a portable drive?
Portable refers to any hard drive that is movable. This kind of drive is usually has one USB port and cable. The cable is used for both data transfer and power supply via USB port of a computer. The drive is usually enclosed in a box. Some companies use a separate board for connection between the drive and USB cable while others have everything built-in the drive. Portable drives are very sensitive against shocks unless the type is Solid State. Portable drives are easy to carry but the power supply can be an issue sometimes if the USB port of a computer is malfunctioning.
Portable drives come in different capacities. The price depends on the size and type of the drive. Regular or traditional drive prices are set by capacity. Solid state drives sizes also determine the price but due to newer technology, their prices are higher than traditional drives. There are several companies that make portable drives like Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, Adata, Samsung, Lacie and more. Some companies like Samsung, Western Digital and Seagate are also making SSD portable hard drives.
Both traditional and Solid Sate portable drives can fail. Traditional drives fail due to several reasons including bad heads and bad electronics, while SSD drives can fail due to failed nand chips, failed electronics and/or a failed controller. All these drives can be recovered. Proper tools are needed to perform advanced data recovery. Traditional portable drives must be handled with care because they are not shock proof.
